There’s no way of getting around it. We live in a world that is filled with stress and sometimes it can be overwhelming. This is why I like to do some things that helps me relax and calm down and lower my stress levels. You can’t have a healthy mind or body if you don’t find ways to help you calm down after a long and stressful day.
Here are some of the things that I like to do that always seem to be able to calm me down and help me to relax and would like to share them with you.
Listen to My Favorite Music
Often when I’m feeling overwhelmed by what’s been thrown at me during the day, I like to sit down and put on my headphones and listen to some of my favorite music. When you listen to music, it can really help you to calm down. Music tends to have a very positive effect on both the mind and the body. It can actually lower your blood pressure and reduce the stress hormone cortisol. Some of my favorite types of music are:
• Classic Rock
• Nature sounds
Call My Best Friend
Another thing that I find that will help calm me down is to pick up the phone and call my best friend. My best friend allows me to blow off steam after a long and stress filled day. I also am to do the same thing for her in her times of need. By talking to a friend and blowing off some steam is a healthy way you can relieve your stress.
Eat the Right Foods
It’s a known fact that our stress levels can be influenced by what we eat. I like to try to eat the right kind of diet. Too often when we become overwhelmed by the world around us, we eat to forget it all. This often leads us to eat sugary foods and fatty snacks. Most of the time instead of grabbing for a bag of chips I try to remind myself to grab some healthy fruits or veggies.
Find Something to Laugh About
Laughter is a wonderful way to have a healthy body and mind because laughing helps release endorphins into our body. These endorphins can elevate our mood and lower the levels of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. So, when I feel the need to laugh I always try to find a funny movie or TV show that I know is bound to get me laughing.
Take Time Out
I have found that if I take some time out for myself without any distractions that I feel a lot more calm and stress free after. Some of the things I like to do are:
• Take a walk with my dog
• Read a good book
It doesn’t matter where you are or for how long you do it, exercise can be key to a healthy body and mind. I find that even at work, if I take a minute or two to get up, stretch and walk around that I feel a lot calmer and more able to hand the stress. I also find that instead of sitting around on my lunch break, I grab my food and take a walk away from my workplace. This helps me to feel a lot more refreshed and willing to finish out the day. Also, when I’m at home, I like to make sure I always take my dog for a walk on a daily basis, weather permitting.
Get a Good Nights Sleep
Sleep is really important to both the mind and the body. If you are tired during the day because of a lack of sleep not only will your mind be tired but your body is going to reflect it as well. What I try to do is to make sure that I go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time each day. I find that it helps to turn off the TV before I start to feel drowsy so that I have a few minutes to relax and unwind before I fall asleep.
Whenever I feel stressed out, I always remind myself to breathe. I do this by taking in a deep breath when I feel overwhelmed. One of my favorite things to do is to take three to five minutes and do this exercise; I sit up in a chair with both my feet on the floor with my hands on my knees. Then I breathe in and out very deeply and slowly. While doing this I try to concentrate on my lungs and fully expand my chest. Deep breathing is what helps to oxygenate the blood and it will help you center you body and it clears the mind. On the other hand, shallow breathing only causes more stress.
Finally, I always like to learn more about things that help to relieve stress. I get it that stress is unavoidable but I also realize you can’t ignore it. It’s important that we learn how to deal with it so it doesn’t go untreated. If we ignore stress and it goes totally untreated it’s going to have a serious negative impact on both our mental and physical well-being.
Just remember, stress can be managed and with patience you’ll be able to reduce the stress in your life and you’ll feel a lot better for it.
