We all probably are aware by now that research has shown that for us to main a healthy body that antioxidants are some of the best nutrients that we can eat that help to prevent us from developing cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants can also slow down the aging process.

Free radicals that the antioxidants fight can also contribute to cardiovascular disease and even age related diseases of the eyes such as cataracts as well as macular degeneration along with an increase in wrinkles and age spots.

So, in order to provide your body with proper antioxidants you need to eat the right foods because supplements just don’t give you the amount that you need. There are plenty of super foods that you can actually grow yourself that will give you the antioxidants that your body needs.

Here are just a few of the super foods that I try to grow in my own garden every year. These foods aren’t really all that difficult to grow and you’ll not only be healthier by growing them but in the end you’ll be more self-sufficient and you’ll be saving money.

Artichokes
Research has discovered that artichokes might be the most potent source of veggies that have antioxidants in them. They prefer to be grown in places that have moist and cooler summers. But you can grow them in containers indoors if you don’t live in that type of climate. If you live in a really moderate area you can even grow this super food all winter long indoors. Broccoli
Believe it or not, broccoli has more vitamin C than most of the citrus fruits that you eat. It’s also a food that is filled up with what are called phytonutrients. This is a cruciferous vegetable known for its ability to lower your risk of developing cancer and is just full of antioxidants. You can start growing this super foo in both spring and fall. Just give it plenty of water and a good amount of nutrients and you’ll be picking fresh heads in about 12 weeks or so. Click Here to see how to grow broccoli.

Potatoes
Potatoes as a super food comes right behind artichokes when it comes to the amount of antioxidants that they have. The best one I think to grow is the Russet potato. They can be grown anywhere in the United States. If you live in colder climates they are ideal to grow in cold weather. They can also be grown all year round if you live in the south or the southwest. Another thing I like about potatoes is that you can grow them in large containers too so you don’t have to dig up your garden to grow them. You can start planting them in early spring and you’ll be harvesting them in about 10 weeks. Click Here to see how to grow potatoes.

Blueberries
Blueberries are super foods that have the most antioxidants of any fruit that you can grow in your own garden. Depending on the kind of blueberry you pick the bushes can grow anywhere from six inches to a whopping 8 feet off the ground. You will need to provide them with a soil that is on the acidic side, give them plenty of water and give them yearly pruning. Click Here to find out how to grow blueberries.

Strawberries
Strawberries are yet another great source when it comes to antioxidants. You should be able to find just about any place to grow them, even on a balcony or porch. Plum Trees
Plums are a great food, especially if you choose the black plums, they taste the best too. They contain a good amount of antioxidants along with three important vitamins, vitamin C, A and K. A plum tree is probably the easiest of all fruit trees that you can grow. They are highly recommended for the novice gardener. They don’t need as much care and pruning as other fruit trees in order to produce a good sized crop for you. They also come in dwarf sizes that you can even grow in containers. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are wonderful to grow and no garden should be without them. They also come in a huge variety of different kinds and different sizes and most of them can be grown in containers too. They will pretty much thrive in any fertile soil as long as you give them plenty of sun and water. Click Here to see how easy it is to grow them.

Garlic
Garlic is a very healthy super food to have around. It has vitamins C and A and also have zinc and selenium. All of these have antioxidant properties. You’ll love it for cooking and it has a lot of medicinal properties as well. They like to be planted in the fall so they can be harvested in the upcoming summer. Make sure the soil is well drained and has good sunlight. Click Here to find out how to grow garlic.

Those are just a few that you can grow. They are the easiest of all the things that you can grow in your garden. What’s really great is that they can all grow in pots and can be grown indoors and outdoors. You’ll love having them around because you’ll save tons of money on herbs and spices by growing your own.
