A lot of us don’t always eat healthy foods and are often guilty of overeating or simply eating foods that are unhealthy. I’ll be the first one to admit, I’m guilty of doing this on occasion. However, by doing this we’re not helping to lower our stress levels. Heaven knows that we get plenty of stress in our lives. This is why I think it’s important that for the body to be healthy as well as the mind, we need to be eating more super foods.

Even though when we eat junk foods, we feel good or get some sort of pleasure from it, often times after that pleasure starts to wear off, we might start fighting mood swings, may become irritable and other things that come along with stress.

Healthy food on the other hand has a more positive impact on our moods and can help us to relieve our tension, lower our stress levels and they also help to stabilize our blood sugar levels.

Here are some of my favorite super foods that I like to try to eat on a regular basis.

Green Leafy Veggies
It’s been discovered that green leafy veggies such as spinach are high in folate. Folate is what helps our bodies to produce neurotransmitters responsible for regulating our moods. Those neurotramsmitters include both dopamine and serotonin. A study showed that people who ate a lot of folate were at a lower risk to be depressed. They also seemed to be a lot calmer during times of stress.

Turkey Especially White Meat
The reason turkey is so good for you is that it’s a really good source for tryptophan. This is an amino acid that helps you convert the neurotransmitter serotonin. It’s been discovered that the more tryptophan one consumes the more pleasant they tend to be. If you don’t like turkey you can always find tryptophan in nuts, pumpkin seeds and eggs.

Foods That Are Fermented
The most common super foods that’s considered fermented would be yogurt. Yogurt has bacteria in it that’s beneficial and helps to fight the unhealthy flora found in the stomach. The bacteria in yogurt seems to have a direct effect on the chemistry of the brain and then helps to transmit good mood and behavior signals to the brain. The bacteria in food like yogurt helps to reduce anxiety and depression.

It’s the omega 3 fatty acids found in salmon that play a big role in our overall well-being. These fatty acids work like antidepressants and ward off feelings of depression. You can also find omega 3 fatty acids in tuna, sardines and anchovies.

Not only do blueberries contain antioxidants they also have what are called anthocyanins and these ae what gives the berries their dark color. These help your brain produce more dopamine neurotransmitters which in turn help our moods, make us feel less depressed and helps with our memory. Dopamine lowers our level of stress too.

Research has discovered that if you eat two servings of these people can lower their vascular constriction when they are in a stress filled situation. Believe it or not, just shelling this super food can have a therapeutic effect by doing this repetitive activity because it keeps your mind off of things that might be racing through your mind.

Dark Chocolate
If you really want to give your mind and body a real boost then eat some dark chocolate. It can even help your body to block depression and even some lower levels of pain. This is because it helps the brain to produce more anandamide which is a neurotransmitter that’s produced in our rains. You’ll also find that chocolate can actually make you feel calmer because it helps to fight off anxiety.

Just love avocados for their great taste but also because they can provide us with almost 20 different healthy nutrients that include potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins and folate. They are also very filling and some say that if you just eat half an avocado a day can help you control your weight because you’ll be less likely to snack later on in the day.

There’s no way to avoid stress, it’s just a part of our daily lives. However, whenever you do start to feel stressed out try your best to eat something from the list I just provided you with. Another thing, there are also some foods that you should avoid whenever you feel stressed out:

•    Sugar
•    Gluten
•    Processed foods

I hope that this has helped you some when it comes to including some of the best super foods that you can eat to help combat stress as well as depression and anxiety.
