LEANING OUR MEAT CONSUMPTION

|
anonymous-cows-5000235.jpgEver since Frances Lappe published Diet For a Small Planet, those of us in the know have known that our meat consumption has an effect on more than our waistlines.

For those of us who don't choose to give up meat altogether, it's important to cut back and replace meat with plant food, and to make sure to buy organic, free-range meat when we do.

Find out more about reasons to eat less meat at eatlessmeat.org.

Among them:

Livestock production accounts for 18% of human-induced global warming.

Chemicals from factory farms runoff into our waterways.

It takes100,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilo of beef and only 500 to produce a kilo of potatoes.

Up to half the world's harvest is fed to farm animals while many people go hungry.

In the last 50 years, 200 million hectares of tropical rainforest have been cleared for livestock grazing.

You can get Lappe's second edition of Diet, Hope's Edge here.

And take a pledge to reduce your meat consumption here.
